I will be adding more examples in the weeks and months to come.
The original Walter Lantz cartoons have been off U.S. television for years - and their presence on home video is practically non-existent. The good news: COLUMBIA HOUSE has just released a ten volume set of "WOODY WOODPECKER AND FRIENDS" collectors edition videos. They are available now on VHS & DVD, by mail order only.
Details are posted below.
At left is a Universal Pictures booking contract for the Woody Woodpecker cartoons - this one is filled out to book all six 1951 releases (PUNY EXPRESS, SLEEP HAPPY, WICKET WACKY, SLINGSHOT 6 7/8, REDWOOD SAP, DESTINATION MEATBALL) into a theatre in New Orleans. $3. rental per cartoon!

See recent Japanese Oswald Rabbit toys here.
1940s MAIN TITLES: Lantz did not have consistent title cards. Which was great - because each picture was its own delightful event. On ocassion they would stick to a standard opening, but they changed formats often, and they were as varied as his cartoon managerie. Walter Lantz was sometimes billed as Walt Lantz.
1950s MAIN TITLES: Lantz got a little more standard in the fifties.
1960s MAIN TITLES: At this point, Lantz got really boring.

Columbia House released a series of Walter Lantz cartoons, entitled WOODY WOODPECKER AND FRIENDS: THE COLLECTORS EDITION, in 2002.

"Life Begins For Andy Panda" was complete and uncut - pygmies and all! |
There were 15 volumes produced. The first ten were released on VHS and DVD. Vols. 11-15 were released only on DVD. Five additional volumes were planned, but the series was scrapped after the 15th volume.
Good news, there is a new WOODY WOODPECKER dvd collection being compiled (I'm a consultant to Universal on this set) for July 2007 release.
Below is a list of the contents of the fifteen volumes of the Columbia House set:
